Why orange chocolate chip cookies? Well, do you agree that there is something about oranges that light things up? I’m not sure if it’s the color or the scent. Perhaps both, but something about them just makes me feel good. I have a fruit basket that should be filled with well… fruits in season. But in this house, it seems like oranges are celebrated all year. With chocolate being my next best friend; it was a given that I would at some point introduce these two to each other.
That said, these orange chocolate chip cookies are a match made in heaven and that’s it! If you are a fan of the classic chocolate chip cookie and like your orange-flavored chocolate as well- then this recipe means you don’t need to choose anymore!
It has been a treacherous journey filled with batch after batch of failed cookies. But finally, I had something I was satisfied with and so bid adieu to my store-bought fav’s and settled for yours truly. I didn’t mean to toot my horn just now, well I just did- but they are worth every gloating word! Come on I’m sure you have a recipe or two that you’re proud of.
I cannot seem to get Keko to wait for these to cool no matter how many times I say they are not ready. Five minutes later I will hear the same request “Mimi, can I have a cookie yet” and the same answer will follow. Okay, I must admit I have fallen into temptation and had one or two before the end of their cooling period. But there is something about biting into freshly baked cookies and watching the chocolate ooze out! sigh, I’m having a craving again.
I used to use store-bought chocolate chip cookies, which are fine but I find that I like the chunky irregular home-chopped chocolate chips better. Making a large batch can come in handy, make, and freeze. When you get a crave simply take from the freezer, leave out for 10 minutes, bake and your orange chocolate chip cookies are ready to dish out! Now, how easy is that?
There are hundreds if not more orange chocolate chip cookie recipes. Each with their own preferred brown sugar. I chose muscovado for a more intense caramel flavor and for the extra moistness.
How to Make Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chop chocolate to a desired size and in a separate bowl sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt
Measure the 2 sugars in one bowl and mix together with your hands to get rid of any lumps
In a large bowl using a spatula mix the butter and sugar then add the egg, orange zest, vanilla, and orange extract.
Next, add the flour mixture in two batches making sure there aren’t any ‘pockets’ of flour then toss in your chocolate chips
Cover and leave in the fridge to rest for 15 minutes as you preheat the oven to 180C
Line the baking tray/s with parchment paper. Roll dough into balls and bake for 13 minutes, rotating the tray/s halfway through.
Leave to cool and serve or store in an airtight container.
Making These Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies:
It’s best to leave your butter out the night before you need to use it (depending on the weather where you are), otherwise, cut the butter into cubes and soften it in the microwave checking every 30 seconds for the right consistency.
Alternatively, put the butter cubes in room temperature water until soft enough to use- should take no more than 10 minutes depending on the weather.
You can substitute the muscovado sugar for light brown soft sugar.
Soft brown sugar can be quite lumpy. Sift both sugars when adding to the butter also to remove any impurities.
Like a pro: Want your cookies to have that flat professional look? Once they are out of the oven, let them rest for about 5 minutes. Then using the bottom of a wide glass, gently press on the cookies. Wipe before moving onto the next one in case some melted chocolate gets stuck on it.
These orange chocolate chip cookies are a little chewy from the brown sugar. Should you want them a wee bit more crunchy you can cook them a little longer but keep an eye on them.
